Writing

We aim to inspire our children with a love for written word enabling them to become imaginative, creative and confident writers. Writing is given strong emphasis so that not only do the children have opportunities to develop their skills in English lessons, but also to apply these skills in a range of cross curricular activities throughout the week. Children are given regular opportunities for independent sustained writing throughout a unit of work where they will be given chances to apply the key skills learned.

We teach children to write for a range of purposes ensuring that they can identify their target audience using the appropriate text type. They will acquire knowledge on how to keep their audience engaged using descriptive language and a highly developed vocabulary.

We develop children with the following essential characteristics to help them become writers:

  • The ability to write fluently and with interesting detail on a number of topics throughout the curriculum.
  • A vivid imagination which makes readers engage with and enjoy their writing.
  • A highly developed vocabulary and an excellent knowledge of writing techniques to extend details or description.
  • Well-organised and structured writing, which includes a variety of sentence structures.
  • Excellent transcription skills that ensure their writing is well presented and punctuated, spelled correctly and neat.
  • A love of writing and an appreciation of its educational, cultural and entertainment values.
